Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) on Wednesday detained two of their own trainee agents for stealing the haul of three robbers they caught red-handed in Beira, in the centre of the country.
The two trainee agents came across three private security guards robbing a warehouse on Sunday, spokesman for the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) Alfeu Sitoe explained.
The policemen used a vehicle and a firearm to escort the robbers and their haul of electronic goods and fabrics to an unknown location, where they abandoned the three security guards.
“They are bringing the institution into discredit,” Sitoe said, adding that steps were being taken so that “they are held accountable, alongside their cronies”.
The involvement of police agents in criminal activity has recently jeopardised the performance of the police, leading to several arrests.
On Monday, the corporation detained two police officers for involvement in a robbery on the outskirts of Maputo, while a week ago, police caught two other agents accused of leading groups of robbers in Niassa province, in the north of the country.
The PRM has promised that there will be “severe and exemplary punishment”, stressing that both disciplinary and criminal proceedings are underway.
