Nine kilograms of heroin disguised as crackers and sweets have been seized at Maputo International Airport in the last 24 hours.
Both alleged traffickers are foreigners, leaving from Maputo for Europe with the drug.
At around 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, a Canadian citizen with 4.4kg of heroin was arrested as he was leaving for Italy, while at around 5:30 a.m. today, a 66-year-old US citizen was caught trying to board an aircraft with 4.6kg of the drug.
The two individuals were travelling to the same destination, using the same route and the same means to disguise the drug.
The American said he didn’t own the heroin. “No, it’s not mine. A gentleman asked me to take this package to someone and I, as a good Samaritan, did so.”
Police say they will step up investigations in an attempt to uncover drug trafficking networks operating within and via Mozambique, which is considered a drug corridor to various countries in Africa, Europe and Asia.
The United Nations is in the process of setting up an Office on Crime and Drugs in Mozambique, to collaborate with national authorities in the fight against drug trafficking and distribution.
