The Mozambican authorities on Monday seized at least three kilos of cocaine at Maputo International Airport from a South African woman, who was returning from Brazil and had Maputo as her final destination.
Addressing a press conference, the Maputo city police spokesperson, Leonel Muchina, said that the drug seizure was part of a coordinated operation between the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) and the airport security staff.
“This coordination enabled us to know that a South African citizen, carrying drugs, was coming from Brazil and Maputo was her final destination,” Muchina said, adding that cocaine is the drug mostly preferred by those involved in international drug trafficking.
The suspected drug trafficker, Janneth Mandiba, 50, who denies all the accusations, said that the luggage does not belong to her, and cannot understand how everything led to her arrest.
When questioned about the destination of the drug, she told reporters that she could only speak in the presence of her lawyer.
“This is not my luggage and I know nothing about it. I have nothing else to say,” said Mandiba, who claims to be the owner of a fashion shop in Maputo.
However, Muchina stated that the suspect who has been criminally charged will appear before a magistrate for breaking Mozambican law by transporting internationally banned drugs. This is the first seizure of cocaine this year at Maputo International Airport.
