The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Angónia district, Tete province, a few days ago detained a Malawian man who was transporting 1.5 tonnes of cannabis sativa, also known as ‘soruma’.
The drug was hidden under a false bottom in a container truck, in an effort to deceive police and highway inspection teams.
The defendant told the PRM that he was bringing the cargo from Malawi, and was headed for neighbouring Zimbabwe, where someone was waiting to receive it.
PRM spokesman Feliciano da Câmara said that, prior to confessing to the crime, the accused said that he was not transporting anything inside the container, but the expertise of the agents on site detected a false bottom containing 89 bags of the drug.
“Once in custody at the District Command in Angonia, the accused confessed his involvement in drug trafficking, adding that it was not the first time that he had travelled the Tete corridor from Malawi to Zimbabwe, the first time, successfully, in 2019,” da Câmara said.
A grassroots multi-sectoral study would be undertaken to assess the complexity and extent of the network using Tete province as a corridor for drug trafficking, he added.
This is the second time this year that police in Tete have seized large quantities of drugs in trucks coming from Malawi. The first such seizure took place in Moatize district.
