The Mozambican Association of Judges (AMJ) denounced on Friday an “attack on the physical and psychological integrity” of a magistrate by an agent of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), a case that took place this week in Maputo.
In a statement, the AJM states that the incident occurred on the afternoon of September 25 near the Infulene Psychiatric Hospital in the Mozambican capital, involving judge Angélica Mutisse, who was approached by an officer of the corporation “duly in uniform, visibly drunk, who demanded that the judge stop the vehicle”.
“He then demanded that the documents be handed over and that the honourable judge open the trunk of the vehicle. At the time, the officer was carrying a weapon, apparently not one of those used by the corporation, which he pointed at the judge’s head in a completely threatening [manner],” the association note recounts.
It adds that these acts “only ended when the judge took refuge inside the hospital”, and that, “with the support of other members of the PRM, on duty at the scene”, it was possible to “arrest the officer”.
“This macabre act is not only an attack on the judge in question, but on the entire judicial system in general. Furthermore, it demonstrates the vulnerability to which this class of professionals is subject, not only in the exercise of their duties, but also in their private lives,” the AJM alleges.
In the statement, the association “vehemently repudiates this macabre attack against its member” and “encourages all the forces of the Mozambican nation to continue to combat this and other acts that threaten the safety of people and their property”.
