The Mozambican police discovered where kidnappers were holding a businessman abducted last week, but by the time the police arrived the gang had fled, taking their victim with them.
“We don’t know how they got this information, but they knew that had been discovered and. moments before the police arrived, they fled”, said Maputo city police spokesperson, Orlando Mudumane, at his weekly press briefing on Monday.
The businessman, named only as Arquissandas, is of Indian origin and owns the Hariche commercial group. He was kidnapped on 24 November from his house in the Maputo neighbourhood of Triunfo.
The drama was filmed by a surveillance camera on the victim’s house. The footage shows Arquissandas driving his car into the yard of his house. Before the electronically operated gates could close, a gang of four men, some of them armed, ran up from the coast, entered the yard and seized their victim. A getaway vehicle drove up to the gate, and the gang dragged the struggling Arquissandas into it. This chain of events took less than a minute.
Mudumane said the hideout located by police was in Liberdade neighbourhood, in the adjoining city of Matola. Asked whether one of the kidnappers owns the house, Mudumane said that enquiries with the neighbourhood authorities revealed that the owners had not lived there for the past three years. The local authorities could only say that “a young man” was living there.
Mudumane said he had no information about the rumour spreading in Maputo that the kidnappers have murdered Arquissandas. He assured the reporters that the police are continuing to track down the gang.
