Mozambique police killed two armed Renamo men that were reportedly caught trying to sabotage a bridge on the N7 in Honde, Báruè district, Manica province, at dawn on Monday.
The pair were part of a group that would have mobilized the population overnight to destroy the bridge in order to interrupt traffic along the highway.
Meanwhile, AIM reports, the provincial police commander in Manica, Armando Mude, said that defence and security forces deployed to the area of Honde to maintain order were tipped off about the Renamo plan and set out to prevent the sabotage, shooting dead two of the group in an exchange of fire.
The report on the incident came a day after armed Renamo men dug a hole across the N7 in the same area, destroying two trucks and a light vehicle and injuring one member of the public.
Police spokesman Elcidia Philip said that traffic flow on the N7 was restored on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking in Chimoio, Filipe said: “On Sunday, cars were able to pass along the N7. The crater was being filled. Security is guaranteed along the road.”
Filipe said that security forces would continue to patrol the N7 and would apprehend those responsible.
