Two people have been killed and four others were injured in Lichinga, Niassa province, in riots after authorities interrupted a celebration for the end of Ramadan due to the restrictions of the state of emergency concerning Covid-19, a police source said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Monday when about 200 people tried to attack a police station in Lichinga, the provincial capital after authorities prohibited the group from celebrating Eid at a local mosque in compliance with the state of emergency rules, Alves Mathe, a Mozambican police spokesman in Niassa, northern Mozambique, said on Tuesday.
“In an attempt to attack the post, the police were forced to shoot into the air and five people were hit by stray bullets,” resulting in two deaths, Alves Mathe said.
In addition to the two deaths, three others were injured by bullets and one was injured during the riots.
According to the police spokesman, during the confusion at the police station, another group, supposedly headed by the leader of a local mosque, set fire to the house of a local ruler for reasons that are still unknown.
