The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Zambézia have appealed to the population to help recapture prisoners who escaped from prisons in the province during the recent violent demonstrations.
The head of the Public Relations Department at the PRM Provincial Command in Zambézia, Miguel Caetano, said that the police had been working with the provincial penitentiary to identify and recapture the escapees. “Two district penitentiaries were set on fire, one in Morrumbala and the one in the Ile district. Naturally, it has not yet been possible to recapture all [the escapees]. It is of course possible that they are creating some scenario of public disorder at the community level, Caetano said.
“What we have been doing is working with local leaders to identify them, so much so that we have already been distributing the names and respective photographs of the individuals who were in the penitentiaries. This will facilitate their recapture, and we have already been achieving this to an extent.”
