Mozambique: Ressano and Goa railway lines closed
Mozambican police on Friday announced the arrest, during operations carried out on Thursday, of six people suspected of abducting businessmen in the centre of the country.
“These people are involved in various kidnapping-related criminal cases in Beira,” Sofala National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) spokesman Alfredo Sitoe told reporters.
The arrests took place at suspects’ homes in the provincial capital at different times.
Police declined to give further details on the grounds that investigations are ongoing. The number of those detained could therefore grow, Sitoe added.
Since the beginning of 2020, Mozambican authorities have registered a total of nine kidnappings of businessmen or their close family members. Three victims were rescued by the authorities, another victim being released in conditions still to be clarified.
On Monday, the detainees were brought before a judge to rule on the legality of the arrests
