Police in Zambezia say they are working to track down the individuals who set fire to the house of Renamo member Manuel Araújo’s mother in the early hours of Monday, with police spokesman Sidner Lonzo reporting on Monday that the arsonists left several clues.
“They fled, leaving behind a machete, and ten edited Renamo party leaflets with two pictures; one of Mr. Mariano Nhongo and one of Mr. Ossufo Momade, and with an X marking the image of Mariano Nhongo. When they immobilised the guard, they said they were from Beira and intended to take the life of the residence’s owner,” Lonzo explained.
Following the incident, Manuel de Araújo, the intended victim’s son, accused Frelimo of involvement in the act, but Frelimo denies any involvement and says it is committed to the principles of peaceful coexistence.
Frelimo spokesman Caifadine Manasse said Manuel de Araújo’s accusations were unfounded, and that the party had no reason to burn down homes.
“Frelimo would have no reason to have this kind of attitude towards any citizen whatsoever, because Frelimo is for law, for peace building, for citizenship, for reconciliation. Frelimo sees the election campaign as a party process, one of consolidating our democracy,” he said.
Manasse calls on all Mozambicans to conduct the election campaign in a festive spirit, refraining from violence.
