The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) have distanced itself from the behaviour of agents involved in the beating of a citizen in the city of Maputo.
The spokesman for the PRM in the city of Maputo, Lionel Muchina, said there was “an excess of zeal” in the behaviour of the agents, which was contrary to the profile of the police as a public corporation.
Lionel Muchina says that the agents would be held accountable in disciplinary procedures.
“We do not recognize this as integrity behaviour by a PRM agent instructed in appropriate postures for any public situation. We were called to the incident because there was an occurrence of violence in which the individual in question assaulted his wife. As a public offence, naturally people have the obligation to report domestic violence but, unfortunately, in an unprofessional action by our agents, there was an excess of zeal. We vehemently distance ourselves from this behaviour, which is not the profile of the police as a corporation, and there are ongoing disciplinary measures to hold these agents accountable for this inappropriate response,” he said.
