The Police of the Republic of Mozambique used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters in Pemba, Cabo Delgado province, who responded to the call of presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane for peaceful marches today.
Supporters of presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who were gathered in the morning, tried to vandalise stalls and barricade the Avenida 25 de Setembro, the main avenue in the city, specifically in the Embondeiro area, Cariacó neighbourhood.
“We will be guaranteeing the safety of all Mozambicans, even the rebels,” a police officer on the ground told Lusa.
The police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters, but they returned to the same place some hours later, forcing the officers to remain.
“We are here to ensure order and security. No-one will be killed or hit; we are using rubber bullets and tear gas to control the situation,” said another officer, who did not wish to be identified.
The protesters, holding signs with slogans such as “people in power, hand over power to the true winner,” threw stones at the police, but there were no reports of casualties.
“Everyone saw the protesters throw stones, but we will continue to protect them anyway. After all, they are Mozambicans and the police know very well that they cannot kill anyone. Their mission is to protect,” said the same officer.
Demonstrations have been called for throughout the country today by Venâncio Mondlane, who, supported by the Podemos party, is claiming victory in the 9 October elections.
In Maputo, the police also dispersed the protesters using tear gas and shooting into the air.
