Mozambican police on Wednesday announced the detention of a man posing as a police officer and seized a gun he was using to threaten his victims in Chimoio, central Mozambique.
The 22-year-old was detained on Monday in a suburb of Chimoio while posing as a police officer to rob his victims, explained Mateus Mindu, a police spokesman in Manica province.
The air rifle “is lethal and was used in the crimes” just like a firearm, Mindu said.
He has been charged with the crimes of “false pretences, illegal possession of a weapon and possession of drugs”, he added.
The police are also investigating whether the detainee is involved in the kidnapping of a businessman from the commercial sector, a week ago in Chimoio.
Mindu was arrested a few hours after he had threatened an angry mob with a gun as they tried to snatch another young man suspected of swindling and extortion from his hands.
