Mozambican police have arrested five people suspected of involvement in kidnapping in Maputo and Inhambane provinces.
Of the five, two are suspected of kidnapping a Portuguese businessman in August last year in Maputo, National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) spokesman Leonardo Simbine said in a statement to the press in a supposedly dismantled cell on the outskirts of the Mozambican capital.
The other three are accused of involvement in the kidnapping of Shelton Lalgy, son of the owner of Lalgy transport company, in November last year in Maputo city.
“In this group we have a traditional healer who used his residence to guard the weapons and vehicles used by the gang in the kidnapping of Shelton Lalgy,” said Leonardo Simbine, adding authorities also suspect the same group of kidnapping another businessman in Inhambane, also in southern Mozambique.
After a wave of kidnappings in the main Mozambican cities that began in 2012, cases had declined until last year, when the authorities again registered new crimes of this type, mainly in the country’s two main cities (Maputo and Beira).
