Police in Manica have detained two young men suspected of having killed a member of the Armed Forces for Defence of Mozambique (FADM) on Saturday during a robbery in a suburb of Chimoio, in the centre of the country, a source from the corporation told Lusa on Monday.
The officer, from the Fifth Infantry Battalion in Chimoio, arrived home to find a robbery underway, and was struck with several blows from a bladed weapon when he intervened, said Mateus Mindu, spokesman for the Manica provincial police command.
“These citizens are being held in connection with an aggravated homicide” for allegedly having killed a newly graduated military officer, he said, adding that criminal proceedings against them had already been filed.
When the military officer reacted to the robbery, “the evildoers stabbed him in the abdomen with a knife”. “Due to the seriousness of his injuries, he lost his life” at the scene, Mindu added.
The two suspects, now detained at the First Police Station, were presented before a judge on Monday for legalization of their detention.
