The Mozambican police arrested two officers suspected of beating a man to death in the city of Beira, in the province of Sofala, central Mozambique, an official source told Lusa on Wednesday.
“The two officers are under arrest and we are in contact with the victim’s family,” Orlando Mudumane, spokesman for the general police command (PRM), said.
Abdul Razak, 44, is said to have been beaten on Sunday in the Munhava district after disagreements with two police officers.
The two policemen allegedly interrupted a teen soccer game in compliance with the recommendations of the state of emergency due to Covid-19, but after expelling the children from the space the PRM officers began to play, which led Abdul Razak, who was on the scene, to threaten to film them.
Following the threat, according to a teenager who witnessed the disagreement, the officers started beating the victim, who was seriously injured and taken to the cells of the local police station.
Razak died on his way to the hospital, after three hours being detained.
The police spokesman said the Mozambican authorities will support the victim’s family.
“We have the information that the funeral has already been held, but the police will provide the necessary support to the family according to the law,” Orlando Mudumane said.
