Mozambican police have arrested three men carrying a total of 28 small heroin packages in Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, a source from the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) announced on Friday.
The detainees, aged between 24 and 48, were selling the heroin in Inhambane and Gaza provinces in southern Mozambique, Sernic spokesman in Inhambane Alceres Cuamba said, without specifying the amount of heroin confiscated.
The detention of the suspects and seizure of the heroin was carried out in “coordination with the Gaza criminal investigation department”, the spokesman said.
“We discovered that the main trafficker in Inhambane province was in Gaza and we immediately sent our colleagues, who went to make the arrest,” Cuamba added.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), authorities in Kenya and Tanzania, to the north of Mozambique, have increased surveillance in recent years, pushing traffickers south towards the Mozambican coast “in search of new routes and new markets”.
Mozambique is identified by several international organisations as a transit corridor for international drug trafficking destined for Europe and the United States of America, especially heroin from Asia, but seizures of cocaine from South America have also increased.
