Mozambican police have arrested two people in possession of two ivory tusks in Gaza province in southern Mozambique, a Mozambican police source said on Thursday.
The two men, aged 20 and 23, were arrested on Tuesday when they were trying to sell the ivory tips in Massingir district, said Paulino Ernesto, head of operations at the district command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), quoted by Radio Mozambique.
“They were caught trying to sell the ivory tips. [The arrest took place] after a coordinated effort with the National Criminal Investigation Service and rangers from the Limpopo National Park”, in Gaza, said Paulino Ernesto.
Poaching in Mozambique has been a serious threat to wildlife in the country, having drastically reduced some species, according to official data.
According to the latest data from ANAC, Mozambique has lost, since 2009, at least ten thousand elephants. Meanwhile, in the Niassa Reserve alone, in the north of the country, the total number of this species has increased from 12,000 to 4,400 in three years (between 2011 and 2014).
