The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has arrested two individuals, aged 20 and 26, accused of murdering Moisés Orlando Machel, 41 years old, a nephew of former President Samora Machel, in the city of Maputo on 12 October.
According to SERNIC spokesperson João Adriano, the suspects told investigators that they had been with the victim at a gathering in the Maxaquene neighbourhood of the capital. At the time, they were reportedly interested in his belongings, including a vehicle and an estimated 27,000 meticais in cash.
To achieve their objective, the pair allegedly faced a choice: either render the victim unconscious or take his life. It is suspected that they initially struck him on the head with a bottle, in order to achieve the first result. The victim reportedly resisted the attack and was then beaten violently to death, with his body abandoned at a different location.
The vehicle was recovered using a tracking device, activated with the family’s authorisation, after it had been abandoned by the perpetrators.
The SERNIC spokesperson said that investigations are continuing to determine further details of the crime.
