The Mozambican Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) announced on Tuesday the arrest of a 38-year-old man in connection with four kidnappings that took place in Maputo city and province.
According to the SERNIC spokesperson in Maputo province, Henriques Mendes, the suspect, who has not yet been named, was detained last week on 1 September, in connection with two kidnappings reported in Maputo city and two in the neighbouring city of Matola, in 2020 and 2021.
Mendes said the victims of the kidnappers included the businesspeople Shelton Lalgy, Rizwan Adatia and Manis Cantilal.
The suspect was arrested in Xai-Xai, capital of Gaza province, on the public highway “after the thorough work that SERNIC was undertaking”, added Mendes.
The unnamed suspect, who said he was unemployed, denied any involvement in the kidnappings. “I just ask Sernic to do its job and to investigate better. I didn’t take part in any kidnapping”, he told reporters.
Bur Mendes insisted there is solid evidence against him. “He should be held responsible for his acts”, he said. “Certainly, he is a member of a gang dedicated to kidnaps, and some of them have been detained”.
He did not reveal how many more alleged kidnappers are under arrest.
