As part of efforts to combat illegal fishing, Mozambique is from this Monday [31 May] to Friday participating in the high-level panel of the Third Meeting of the Parties to the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent, Deter and Eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.
At the continental level, Mozambique is the only country invited to participate in the panel, and the opening of the Meeting of the Parties, in recognition of its role in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing at regional and global level.
Mozambique’s Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Augusta Maita, during her intervention highlighted the fact that the country has, over the years of the agreement’s implementation, increased its ability to monitor vessels invading territorial waters and entering national ports.
Minister Maíta reiterated that the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing would remain at the top of Mozambique’s priorities.
In addition to sharing its achievements during Monday’s meeting, Mozambique also shared experiences and challenges in implementing the FAO agreement.
