At a meeting on the fight against AIDS with members of the Mozambican government, civil society and the private sector, the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Council against AIDS (CNCS), Idalina Lubombo announced that Mozambique recorded an average of 223 new cases of HIV/Aids per day, chiefly among young people.
Idalina Lubombo also said Mozambique lost 17 percent of its young people each year to HIV/Aids, as “the disease is spreading very rapidly at national level”.
HIV/Aids is a “critical issue for us, and we are trying to equip young people deal with this pandemic in their communities”. “Young people play a major role in the economic development of this country,” she added.
Mozambique is currently making efforts to mobilize donors for the US$150 million needed to rebuild its economy and health infrastructure. The country plans to build a plant to produce anti-retroviral drugs to increase access to treatment for people with HIV/Aids.
