Mozambique’s government approved a Road Safety Action Plan on Tuesday, an instrument aimed at curbing the high accident rates.
“The plan stems from the situation that the country is going through, with high-impact accidents,” declared the Minister of Planning and Development, Salimo Valá, during a press conference after the weekly cabinet meeting in Maputo.
The plan provides for a series of actions to reduce the number of road accidents in the country, including strengthening inspections, changes to legislation and interventions at points considered “critical”, as well as raising awareness among communities.
“The structural areas of the plan include interventions at critical points, which comprise 28 locations (…) covering the provinces of Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Manica, Sofala, Tete and Nampula,” he said.
The plan also includes the construction of a post-accident care centre as a pilot project in the Manhinça district of Maputo province, one of the areas with a high accident rate in the country.
Road accident rates in Mozambique are classified as dramatic by various organisations.
The authorities have pointed to speeding and drink-driving as the main causes.
The country has recorded more than 4,800 deaths in road accidents in the last five years, according to figures released in May by the government, which is calling for society’s involvement to curb the scourge.
