The Pequenos Libombos dam in Mozambique, which supplies water to the province of Maputo, will increase discharges to ensure the safety of the infrastructure in view of the approaching rainy season, the Regional Water Administration (ARA) announced on Saturday.
“In preparation for the 2024/25 rainy season, with the aim of creating storage capacity and maintaining the operational safety of the Pequenos Libombos Dam, the Regional Water Administration of the South will gradually increase discharges from September 1st,” the statement reads.
Discharge will, over the next few days, increase from seven cubic metres of water to 30 cubic metres, the statement said.
ARA-Sul calls on residents on the Umbelúzi River, which supplies the dam, to take precautionary measures, avoid river crossings and monitor hydrological information issued by the competent entities.
