Residents of Maxixe in Inhambane province are still using well water for domestic use and, in addition to the water being unsafe, women have to travel long distances to get it.
“We suffer a lot, because we have to go very far to get water,” complained Hortência Raimundo, a resident of Maxixe.
Aurélia Venâncio is experiencing the same dilemma and also complains about the fact that women are forced to rise very early to perform this task.
“We wake up at 4:00 a.m. to go to the lower area. We don’t sleep. Our life is getting water. Only after that do we go to the ‘machamba’,” she said.
The mayor of Maxixe acknowledges the problem and says that the municipality intends to build five more small-scale water supply systems in the same number of neighbourhoods this year.
In Maxixe, there are reports of water sources being vandalised, with Governor of Inhambane Eduardo Mussanhane saying this must stop.
The Maxixe mayor and the governor of Inhambane province were speaking to the press after inaugurating three small-scale water supply systems providing water to a total of 4,500 people.
