The plenary session of the IX and penultimate Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Republic, in its IX Legislature, begins tomorrow, February 22, 2024. The session, which is expected to discuss a total of 24 matters, will run until May 30th.
Among the matters to be discussed by the 250 deputies, is the draft revision of the electoral package, the preparation of which was entrusted to a Parliamentary Working Group, created by the Standing Commission, and which is led by deputy Ana Rita Sithole, from the Frelimo parliamentary group.
Specifically, the Assembly of the Republic will review Law No. 2/2019, of May 31, relating to the election of the President of the Republic and deputies; Law No. 3/2019, of May 31, on the election of Members of the Provincial Assembly and the Provincial Governor; and Law No. 4/2019, of May 31, which defines the principles, organisational standards, powers and functioning of the executive bodies of provincial decentralised governance.
The debate on the Proposals for Resolutions that Ratify the Agreements on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters and Extradition between Mozambique and Rwanda is also scheduled. These are agreements signed in Kigali, capital of Rwanda, on June 3, 2022, by the Ministers of State for Constitutional and Legal Affairs of Rwanda, Nyirahabamina Soline, and of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs of Mozambique, Helena Kida, and approved by the Council of Ministers in February last year. The two documents will be assessed today by the deputies of the Parliamentary Commission on International Relations, Cooperation and Communities.
Government Information, Questions to the Government, Annual Information from the Attorney General of the Republic and the Proposal for Revision of the Public Probity Law are other matters that will occupy the penultimate session of parliament in the last year of the IX Legislature.
However, the Proposals for a Law on the Promotion and Protection of People with Disabilities and the Law on Public Water Supply and Sanitation Services (LAAS) could be the first matters to be discussed in plenary by deputies.
Today, deputies from the Agriculture, Economy and Environment and Public Administration and Local Government Commissions will meet for a parliamentary hearing with the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, around the proposed Water Supply Law and Sanitation, while deputies from the Commission on Social Affairs, Gender, Technologies and Media meet to consider the proposed Law on the promotion and protection of people with disabilities.
