Mozambican Customs has seized large quantities of cosmetics in the city of Pemba, Cabo Delgado province, allegedly for false declarations of goods imported from the neighbouring Republic of Tanzania. The products include 650 boxes of skin lotion and 200 of alcohol and gel.
“The importer submitted a declaration as raw merchandise, when in fact they are processed products, and paid only VAT and not the specific consumption tax, which constitutes a crime of misappropriation,” Milagre Matusse, Director of Provincial Services of the Customs in Cabo Delgado explained.
In addition to assessing the damage that would be caused if the truck managed to reach its destination, Customs is also investigating the origin of the goods, since the importer benefited from preferential treatment by declaring that the products come from the SADC region.
“We are also checking whether the goods come from Tanzania, because the importer has presented a certificate of origin that grants preferential treatment because they are SADC products,” Matusse added.
The truck entered Mozambique at the Negomano border, in northern Cabo Delgado, and the goods were destined for the neighbouring province of Nampula.
The press did not have access to the goods, allegedly because Mozambique Customs could not open the truck in the absence of the owner.
