Negotiations between the government and Renamo, the main opposition party in Mozambique, will be suspended on Saturday and will resume on 7 November, the coordinator of the mediators, Mario Raffaelli, announced yesterday.
“This round will end on Friday, and we will issue a press release then. We will resume on 7 November,” Raffaelli said. The mediation team would meet with the Government-Renamo Joint Commission on Friday, he added.
In the current round, which started on the 18th of this month, the mediation team has been holding meetings with both delegations separately, meaning that the mediators were not able to issue any statements to the press about the contents discussed.
“We cannot talk to the press about what was discussed,” Raffaelli said, adding that this position was part of an agreement between the parties.
The negotiations between the government and Renamo are aimed at preparing a meeting between Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, to end the political and military instability in Mozambuique
Among the agenda items are the immediate cessation of fighting, the separation between party and the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), including police and Information Services, and the disarmament of Renamo and its reintegration into civilian life.
