Mozambique’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo, is addressing the UN Security Council Open Debate today in New York. The debate focuses on “Maintaining International Peace and Security with a Spotlight on Artificial Intelligence.”
The session, convened by the United States, which holds the Council’s rotating presidency for December, is being chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Minister Verónica Macamo is among the special guests invited to the discussion.
Macamo is expected to share Mozambique’s experiences regarding the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on peace and security processes.
This debate occurs as the United Nations raises growing concerns about the escalating risks associated with unregulated AI. In late November, UN Secretary-General António Guterres compared the AI issue to the global climate crisis, calling it one of humanity’s most pressing challenges. Speaking at the 10th Forum of the Alliance of Civilizations in Cascais, Portugal, Guterres stressed the urgent need for UN Security Council intervention to curb AI’s potentially harmful impacts.
Mozambique, a non-permanent member of the Security Council since 2023, is now in the final days of its mandate.
The Minister’s presence in New York also includes high-profile meetings, including one with UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Macamo will use the opportunity to thank the Security Council and the UN for their support during Mozambique’s tenure, during which the country chaired the Council in March 2023 and May 2023.
Mozambique’s role on the Council has been marked by its advocacy for multilateralism in addressing global peace and security issues, emphasizing the impact of conflicts on women and children, the use of technology for sustainable development, and the need for Security Council reforms.
