A delegation led by Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Fredson Bacar is representing Mozambique as Member of the Executive Council of UN Tourism at the 67th Session of that organization’s Regional Commission for Africa, from 22 to 24 July, in Livingstone, Zambia.
The Mozambican delegation includes Abílio Santos Simão, National Director of Planning and Cooperation and Kátia Gaspar, Investment and Development Services Technician at the National Tourism Institute.
The event has the participation of 23 delegations from African countries led at the highest level by the guardians of tourism or their representatives and another 200 delegates and guests.
The meeting, chaired by Mauritius, takes place under the theme “Transforming the Future of Africa’s Tourism: Education, Skills and Strategic Investment in Tourism for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth”.
At the event, issues linked to the challenges of tourism in Africa are being discussed in depth, focusing on three themes: Investing in people: Education and Skills Development; Strategic Investment in Tourism; and Security of Destinations: Fundamental role of the Tourism Police.
The ministers were unanimous in stating that tourism in Africa faces many challenges ranging from the promotion of tourist destinations, air connectivity, training and capacity building of human resources, investments and sustainability projects.
There was unanimity that Africa must reverse this scenario with policies, strategies and concrete actions, aiming to achieve desirable levels of development and growth.
To this end, they defended investment in tourism education through the creation of tourism schools; the inclusion of tourism in teaching curricula at all levels (primary, secondary, secondary and higher); the construction of tourism infrastructure; and the security of destinations.
Mozambique’s Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism said that the Government of Mozambique was committed to reversing the scenario experienced during the COVID 19 pandemic crisis, having for this purpose approved the package of economic acceleration measures that allowed the introduction of electronic visas and unilateral visa exemption for citizens of 29 countries around the world, among other measures.
Fredson Baccar likewise mentioned the recent agreement creating the ZIMOZA (Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia) Transfrontier Conservation Area, which will contribute to boosting culture and tourism in the three countries.
On the sidelines of CAF, the “ Brand Africa and Tourism Think Tank” took place, attended by tourism institutes, the private sector, academics, researchers and various other stakeholders in the tourism production chain. They addressed challenges regarding the creation of the African tourism brand, the barriers that still hinder investments and the accelerated development of tourism in some African countries, among other matters.
The 67th Session of the CAF ended with the selection of Nigeria as the host the 68th UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa in 2025.
