Mozambique’s parliament on Friday scheduled an extraordinary session, for 18 and 19 June to discuss new electoral legislation.
“There are conditions for [the session] to be held from 18 July. In principle it will be a two-day session,” said Mateus Khatupa, spokesman for the Parliamentary Standing Committee, after a meeting of the body.
The schedule for the 10 October municipal elections depends on the laws awaiting parliamentary approval.
According to Khatupa, the three groups on Friday analysed the situation that led to the adjournment of the session.
At the time, the Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) postponed the session until there were advances in the disarmament negotiations of the armed wing of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party.
Asked if there was already an understanding, Khatupa confirmed that an agreement had been reached to overcome the parliamentary stalemate following a handshake on Wednesday between the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, and Renamo coordinator Ossufo Modade.
“There are concrete signs,” he said, referring to understandings to move ahead with the package of disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration of Renamo’s men.
