The parliamentary benches of Renamo and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) were empty at the opening of the VIII Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Republic, in the IX Legislature.
Renamo wa absent, contesting the electoral results, while MDM did not justify its absence, Domingo online reports.
In the traditional session opening speech, this time without Renamo and MDM deputies, Parliamentary Speaker Esperança Bias, cited by ‘A Verdade’, declared the October 11 election a “success”, adding that “our young democracy has emerged stronger” and appealing to political parties “to wait calmly for the announcement of the final results by the competent bodies”.
According to ‘A Verdade’, Esperança Bias said that during the parliamentary session, which is to last until December 21st, deputies will consider and approve 23 matters, among which she highlighted “the Annual Information of the Head of State on the General State of the Nation; Information from the Ombudsman; Government Information; Questions to the Government; the Proposed Law that approves the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget for 2024; the Proposal for Revision of Law No. 4/71, of 21 August, Law on Freedom of Religion and Worship; the Proposal for Revision of Law No. 32/2009, of 25 November, Military Service Law; the Draft Resolution relating to the General State Account for the year 2022; the Proposed Law that Creates the Sovereign Fund; Information from the Parliamentary Office for the Prevention and Combat of HIV and AIDS; and Information from the Petitions, Complaints and Complaints Committee.”
For head of Frelimo parliamentary bench Sérgio Pantie, also cited by ‘A Verdade’, the sixth local elections presented “a vote of confidence from Mozambicans that demonstrates once again and unequivocally the recognition of the work that the party has been doing towards improving living conditions of residents”.
“The intermediate STAE and CNE counts attest that the people legitimized Frelimo to govern the majority of municipalities for the next five years,” said Pantie, highlighting “the rescue of municipalities in the City of Nampula, Angoche, Ilha de Moçambique, Nacala- Porto, Malema, Quelimane, Cuamba and Chiúre, as well as the victory in the new municipalities created last year”.
Sérgio Pantie also offered some moral advice to the opposition parties. “It is worth reminding Mozambicans,” he said, “that in the 2018 local elections, Frelimo lost the majority of municipalities in the province of Nampula to Renamo” but “did not call into question the results, did not hold marches of protest, he did not incite violence nor civil disobedience, but timely congratulated the winner. We maintained the same stance for the other municipalities won by the opposition”.
