The Assembly of the Republic is running against the clock to amend the VAT code and exempt sugar, edible oil and soap transactions until 31 December, O País reports.
The three products were previously exempt from VAT until the exemption expired on 31 December last year but, with the renewal of the exemption, the government hopes to reverse hikes in the price of these staples.
The President of the First Commission of the Assembly of the Republic, António Boene, says that conditions exist for the document to be approved by the deputies on Friday.
This Tuesday, the first commission of the Assembly of the Republic is hearings candidates for membership of the Superior Council for the Administrative Judiciary and the Central Ethics Commission.
