The Assembly of the Republic today approved, in general terms, the proposal for a Law on National Defence and on the Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique to legalise the involvement of the ‘Local Force’ in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado.

Parliament also approved, by general consensus, a proposal to revise the legal framework for the election of office bearers in local authorities, reducing the period for application from 120 to 60 days.
According to the government, this change will contribute to obtaining seat numbers for each Municipal Assembly, and will allow competitors to see a copy of the registration book, 30 days before the date of the elections.
The amendment will also, from the executive’s point of view, harmonise with previously approved rules on voter registration.
