The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) approved in a plenary session in South Africa on Thursday a motion of support and solidarity to Maputo, presented by Mozambique’s members of parliament, condemning the acts of terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
“The Pan-African Parliament rejects and strongly condemns the barbaric, terrible and cowardly acts committed by terrorists against the people of Mozambique, especially against women, children and the elderly,” said the document to which Lusa had access.
“It also condemns those who finance, supply arms and instigate terrorism and violent extremism in Mozambique and Africa in general,” it added, without identifying the sources of the armed conflict.
The motion, which the representatives unanimously approved of the African Union (AU), came at the end of the 1st ordinary session of this year, held this morning in Johannesburg, immediately after a debate on armed violence on the continent in which the peace agreement reached between the Ethiopian government and the rebel authorities of Tigray last week in South Africa was welcomed, a source from the parliament told Lusa.
In the document, the Mozambican MPs recognised the efforts of the African Union (AU) and African countries involved at a military and diplomatic level in resolving the armed conflict in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
“It commends the support that Mozambique has received from African Union member states regarding the occurrence of terrorist attacks that, since 2017, have caused more than two thousand deaths and more than 600,000 displaced persons in the northern province of Cabo Delgado,” the document said.
However, the motion did not refer to Western mediation efforts, military and financial support, particularly by Portugal and other European Union (EU) countries, in the fight against terrorism in the Lusophone African country.
According to the document, the “show of support” against terrorism in Mozambique “should extend to strengthening the fighting capacity of its defence and security forces,” he said, noting that the PAP “is sure that Mozambique will continue to receive moral, political and other relevant support to fight terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
The Mozambican deputies also called for “help” from African heads of state and government to “combat the scourge of terrorism and violent extremism that threatens to affect the entire SADC [Southern African Development Community] region.
The first ordinary session of the 6th term of the Pan-African Parliament, which elected its highest body in August, was held from 24 October to 10 November at the institution’s headquarters in Midrand, north of Johannesburg.
