Rwanda reached deal with US to take in up to 250 migrants, government says
The ruling Frelimo party on Wednesday called the attack on the town of Palma an attack on the sovereignty and development of the country, adding that the government “is looking” with international partners at ways to combat terrorism.
Caifadine Manasse, Frelimo spokesman, said that the action of armed groups operating in Cabo Delgado, where Palma is located, aims to undermine the peace in Mozambique, in Southern Africa and throughout the world.
“We have to stand together and do everything we can to repudiate these macabre attacks perpetrated by people who do not want to see development, do not want to see peace for Mozambicans and particularly for the Southern African region and the world in general,” he stressed.
He rejected accusations that the government neglected the threat of violent extremism even at the beginning of the armed groups’ activities in 2017, stressing that the executive’s priority is to protect the lives and property of residents in the face of terrorist actions.
He stressed that the authorities are responding fully to the attacks in Cabo Delgado, providing conditions and training to the defence and security forces (FDS).
“At this moment, the important thing is for all of us to be united, to cherish the government and to make sure that the government creates conditions so that Palma and Cabo Delgado are at peace,” Caifadine Manasse said.
The Mozambican executive, he added, is committed to cooperation with its international partners, for joint action in the fight against terrorism.
In this action, he added, the executive is receiving the collaboration of several states, including Portugal and the US.
“Each one gives the support that is necessary, but who has to fight terrorism, who has to defend Mozambican sovereignty are the Mozambicans, it is the Mozambican army,” he stressed.
