The 10 individuals identifying themselves as Pakistani nationals and rescued last May from the high seas off the Port of Beira are being held in Beira Central Prison on charges of illegal emigration.
Secretary of State in Sofala province, Stella Zeca, confirmed the outlines of the case yesterday while declining to provide further details on the grounds that the matter is already under the competence of the supervisory authorities.
It is alleged that the vessel on which the detainees were found had been adrift for about two months due to mechanical and communications problems.
According to the occupants, the boat left the Pakistani city of Baluchistan on 21 February to rescue another vessel from the same fleet which had also been adrift for several weeks.
The boat was towed to the Manarte pier, next to the Beira Fishing Port, where both thick and fine mesh nets could be seen on board. The water tanks were empty, and the obsolete engine showed of attempts at repair.
In order to guarantee security, members of almost all branches of the Defence and Security Forces of Mozambique appeared on site, and SERNIC [Criminal Investigation Police] detectives questioned the crew and searched the vessel.
The rescued crew were dealt with in accordance with international maritime practices and were screened in the context of Covid-19 countermeasures.
