A heavy goods truck on Monday caused the collapse of the bridge over the Muririmue river, between Mogovolas and Moma, affecting road traffic between the two districts. A labourer travelling on the truck, whose identity it was not possible to ascertain, died in the incident.
Local authorities in Mogovolas district are blaming the incident on overloading of the vehicle, which was transporting wood between Moma and the city of Nampula.
The driver was taken to the District Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), and legal procedures are ongoing to hold to account anyone culpable of disobeying the rules regarding crossing bridges in the province.
At the moment, people are crossing on foot under the bridge, which is impassable for cars.
The administrator of Mogovolas district, Emanuel Impissa, said that if it rains heavily in the coming days, river flow could increase and render the area impassable.
