Some hospitals in Nampula district have, in recent days, registered a high flow of patients seeking medical treatment for water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera and malaria.
Another reason for the flooding of patients is the destruction of the Namicopo Health Centre during post-election demonstrations, which has forced more than 80,000 residents to seek health services at the nearest hospitals instead.
Soraia Atumane, mother of a sick baby, said that whenever she goes to the 1.º de Maio Health Centre she finds overcrowding and suspects that the lack of staff at the health unit is also one of the causes.
A resident of Namicopo, Soraia said that, before the destruction of the health centre in her neighbourhood, the number of patients was not so high and that she did not have to wait long to be seen.
Joaquim Vicente, who was waiting for care at the 25 de Junho Health Center, said that technicians were doing their best to deal with the long queues.
In turn, Naira Armando, another patient, thought that the destruction of hospital infrastructure was behind the overcrowding in hospitals, along with the prevalence of water-borne diseases relating to the rainfall.
Managers at the hospitals in question say that the number of appointments has increased two or three-fold compared to the average.
Clinical director Emília Matola said that the 25 de Junho Health Centre would, under normal circumstances, attend to 300 to 400 patients daily, compared to the current 800. However, even with the high flow, the facility had almost all the items needed to care for patients and technicians were prepared to serve everyone, without distinction of any kind.
Meanwhile, the director of the 1st of May Health Centre, Danito Branco, stated that the medical team had been reinforced to cope with the increase in the number of patients coming from different locations. He however highlighted out the need to increase still further the number of health technicians, including nurses and doctors, in order to continue improving healthcare at the unit.
