Mozambique’s government is to launch a nationwide census for the compulsory military service for 2021 on Wednesday and expects to cover about 200,000 youths, the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.
According to the document, the census has been officially held since 2 February and will end on 28 February, in a process that covers all Mozambican citizens of both sexes inside and outside the country.
According to the communiqué, all Mozambicans born in 2003 and those who have not been able to do so before, as long as they have not passed the age of 35, will be able to be registered.
The exercise will take place throughout the country and in diplomatic and consular missions for young Mozambicans living abroad.
In 2020, according to data from the Mozambican Ministry of Defence, more than 185,000 young people were enrolled in the military service.
The military census in Mozambique is carried out at the beginning of each year and does not automatically imply incorporation into the military service, as this act is subject to aptitude tests and the number defined annually for entry into the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM).
