More than 17,000 customers have been without electricity since this morning in several areas of Sofala province, central Mozambique, due to the destruction of power poles caused by uncontrolled fires [queimadas descontroladas] , the Mozambican power utility has announced.
In a statement sent to the media, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) said that the power outage occurred in part of Gorongosa district, affecting a total of 17,340 customers.
“An anomaly was recorded as a result of uncontrolled fires that destroyed poles along the medium-voltage line. This incident caused the interruption of electricity supply in some areas of Sofala province,” the state-owned company said.
The company added that technical teams are on the ground working to restore power to the affected areas “as soon as possible.”
