A total of 15,640 vulnerable families in the areas affected by Cyclone Kenneth in Cabo Delgado will receive support for resilient livelihood recovery, said a note from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The support, which results from a collaboration between UNDP and the Mozambican government, will cover the most vulnerable populations in the districts of Metuge, Ibo and Pemba, the UNDP note said
“The plan begins with the creation of temporary jobs and the identification of productive facilities in the community that can be prioritised and rehabilitated by the beneficiary community,” according to the document.

In addition to families affected by Cyclone Kenneth, the support will cover populations that have fled armed violence in the districts of Macomia, Quissanga and Ibo Island, further north of Cabo Delgado, where incursions by groups classified as a terrorist threat have caused the death of at least 1,059 people and forced the escape of another 250,000 since October 2017.
The initiative, called the Recovery Mechanism Programme (MRF), was already being implemented in Sofala, another Mozambican province hit by a cyclone in 2019.
“The activities of the Recovery Mechanism have been successfully implemented in the province of Sofala since September 2019. They have a positive impact on the lives of the most vulnerable communities,” the note said.
The MRF, budgeted at $1.2 million (about €1 million), is financed by the European Union, Canada, China, Finland, the Netherlands, India and Norway.
Cyclone Kenneth hit northern Mozambique in April 2019, causing 45 deaths and affecting some 250,000 people.
Shortly before Kenneth, in March, the centre of the country was affected by cyclone Idai, which killed 604 people and affected another 1.8 million.
