Sudden power cuts in Nampula since last week’s heavy rain have left more than 500,000 Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) customers in the dark.
EDM’s customer service director in the province, Cristiano Neves, explained that the outages were related to short-circuits on the main power line from Songo, but was unable to say how long the situation would last.
Twenty-five thousand customers have been affected in the city of Nampula alone.
According to Neves, a transformer located near the city’s central market was impacted by rain on Tuesday afternoon (06-02), causing a two-hour power cut.
Asked whether outages might affect the inauguration of new municipal bodies in Nampula’s eight municipalities this Wednesday, Neves said that the company’s technical teams would be on standby for any eventuality.
