For this endeavour, coach Abinério Ussaca takes a total of 14 athletes, with Vulcano and Ntsondzo dominating the squad with five active players each.
Our ‘Barefoot Mambas’ are included in Group A, alongside South Africa, African champion Senegal and Seychelles.
Mozambique debuts in the competition on Sunday, September 25, in a face-off with Senegal in Durban. We all remember the clash between the two teams last year at the African Beach Soccer Championship in Dakar, where the national team lost 4-1 to the Senegalese.
Then, at 10:30 am. on Monday, September 26, the Mozambican team faces its Seychelles counterpart at the South Beach Arena.
At the end of the group stage, at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, Mozambique faces South Africa, a team the Barefoot Mambas beat 5-3 in the semi-finals last year.
The 2022 edition of the COSAFA Tournament has special significance, as it precedes the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Vilankulo, Inhambane province, from October 21-30.
Last year, on its path to glory, Mozambique started by thrashing Comoros 8-3. This was followed by a four-ball draw with Tanzania, the opponent we would play again in the final. In the semi-final, the national team beat South Africa by 5-3, and, in the final, beat Tanzania 3-1.
Mozambique’s Nelson Manuel was voted best player in the competition.
