The Mozambican chapter of the regional press freedom body MISA (Media Institute of South Africa) and the Higher Mass Media Council (CSCS), a public entity, on Tuesday asked for greater urgency in the investigation into a fire that hit a media group in the centre of the country.
On Sunday, the fire destroyed the building and equipment of Rádio Chuabo FM, Jornal Txopela and the Zambézia 24 Horas portal, all belonging to the same media group, in the city of Quelimane, capital of Zambézia province.
In a statement to which Lusa had access today, MISA asks the authorities to “speed up” determination of the causes of the incident and to create conditions for the resumption of the affected media outlets’ operations.
The stoppage deprives the inhabitants of Quelimane “of access to free information on what is considered, by many, one of the largest and most innovative media projects in Quelimane and in the entire province of Zambézia”, the note in question reads.
The CSCS also calls for “the swiftest public clarification of the causes of the fire”, saying in its statement that it hopes that “the incident does not harm the journalistic activity” of the media affected by the fire.
In August, 2020, a fire swept through the premises of Canal de Moçambique, a leading weekly newspaper in the country, with the incident treated by the administration as arson and condemned by organizations defending press freedom at home and abroad.
The police have never publicly clarified the cause of the fire.
