Renamo, Mozambique’s main opposition party, and MDM, the country’s third biggest party, have said the country’s 2019 state budget is a “failure,” while ruling party Frelimo said it “protected social groups in difficult situations.”
The Mozambican government presented the country’s state budget at parliament on Tuesday. It includes revenue of around 249 billion meticals (€3.58 billion) and total expenditure of 340 billion meticals (€4.885 billion).
RENAMO said the state budget deserved a “negative assessment” and criticised the fact that the president supposedly receives more than the ministry of agriculture and food safety, adding that the armed forces and defence budget was “haunting.”
The MDM party said the state budget was a “failure” and accused the government of not being concerned with the agriculture sector, “presenting unreal forecasts of 5.7% in 2018 and 11% in 2019 without explaining what the basis was.”
Ruling party Frelimo praised the document, saying it “prioritises a bigger budgetary allocation to priority economic and social sectors.”
The state budget is to be approved on Wednesday at a national assembly plenary session.
