Two officials of the opposition Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) in the southern province of Gaza were kidnapped and savagely beaten on Wednesday, according to a report in Friday’s issue of the independent daily ‘O Pais’.
The officials were MDM Gaza provincial delegate Alberto Nhamuxe and youth delegate Emilio Mula. According to a party spokesperson they were kidnapped when they were on their way to Mabalane district to undertake political activities. After they were beaten up, the two men were dumped in the Mabalane bush.
The MDM source told ‘O Pais’ that the attackers used a vehicle known to belong to a high ranking Gaza figure in the ruling Frelimo Party. The MDM thus believes that the attack was politically motivated.
The injuries suffered by Nhamuxe were serious enough for him to be transferred to the Gaza provincial hospital in the city of Xai-Xai, while Mula’s condition is described as “stable”.
The MDM says it has lodged a complaint against the assailants, with the Mabalane district attorney’s office.
‘O Pais’ has so far been unable to obtain conformation of the incident from the Gaza police.
