Opposition parties in Mozambique are expected to appeal the Oct. 10 municipal election results in at least seven municipalities, the nongovernmental organisation Centre for Public Integrity (CIP) announced yesterday.
André Magibire, the representative of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), had already told Lusa on Monday that his party was going to appeal in five municipalities.
The CIP electoral bulletin also announced on Wednesday that the Mozambican Democratic Movement (MDM), Mozambique’s third-largest political party, would appeal, bringing to seven the number of municipalities in which the results will be contested in court. Those now comprise Moatize, Alto Molocué , Marromeu, Monapo, Tete, Milange and Chimoio.
In some cases the two opposition parties made common cause and in others acted separately, it adds.
Official results released on Sunday gave victory to the governing Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) in 44 municipalities and to Renamo in eight municipalities, while the Mozambican Democratic Movement (MDM), the country’s third-largest political party, won in the municipality of Beira.
Compared to the 2013 election results, Frelimo has lost a total of five municipalities to the opposition.
