The Mozambican authorities have opened five centers in Beira to house about 18,300 people displaced by storm Desmond, it has been announced today.
The storm caused rain and strong winds between Monday and Wednesday in central Mozambique, especially in Beira, the capital city of Sofala Province.
The storm cause widespread flooding and destroyed houses, reports the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC).
A spokeswoman for the Council of Ministers announced on Tuesday that the rains have already caused 36 deaths and 60 injuries since the onset of the rainy season in October last year.
Storm Desmond has caused at least two deaths in Beira, authorities said.
